Upcoming singer’s Symposium
Curiosity is a powerful tool for growth. With it, the mind opens. Without it, well, my sense is we can get a bit stuck. These times are challenging, due to the obvious issues around the pandemic, but also the seeming polarization and separation occurring across humanity. Within the world of singing and specifically within the community of competitive barbershop, I feel softer lines drawn. Perhaps that’s why I’ve come to so dearly love our unique corner of the universe. We may not all be close friends or agree completely with one another’s perspectives, but when we sing together, there are no margins, no lines, just like a barbershop ballad.
There is a joke that you will never find two voice teachers that agree. I have come to believe that is not true. We may not come from the same vocal pedagogical approach or have the same teaching or performance experiences behind us, but I know that we agree on one thing, that the singers in our care matter, and to the best of our ability, our desire is to assist them towards more freedom, ease and the ability to pursue their dreams.
On February 5th and 6th, I’ve created an opening for a somewhat unique opportunity, a Singer’s Symposium. Nine voice instructors, who each come from varying backgrounds and experiences, will join together to dialogue about their approaches and perspectives. Each one will have a twenty-minute window to share their approach, allowing another five minutes for Q & A from the attendee chat. At the end of this event, the entire panel will come together to dialogue and share wisdom for these very challenging times. My belief is that we will all come to see our commonality and our uniqueness in the world of singers we serve. Knowing that nine of us only begin to touch the surface of talented teachers, it is my hope that this will be but a first conversation of many to come!
